I've recently gotten into his podcast Lexicon Valley and I recommend it highly if you are interested in language and how we use it.

There is also an episode of one of my favorite podcasts (Slate's Lexicon Valley) that focuses on this issue

I'd highly encourage you to listen to this lexicon valley podcast, I am a bit skeptical on mandarin or cantonese or one of the other dialects of chinese taking over globally.
